Climbing enthusiasts often refer to Rifle Mountain Park as a mecca of climbing, and it’s not hard to see why. The park, with its vast acreage of limestone walls, boasts more than 250 bolted climbing routes. Most of the routes are for moderate to advanced climbers, but, in recent years, the park has been working to expand its offerings for beginners. Try well-used routes like the Anti-Phil, Blasphemy Wall, Arsenal, Ruckman Cave and Wasteland. In the winter, water seeps into Rifle Mountain Park, freezing and forming natural ice walls perfect for ice climbing.
Not into climbing? Rifle Mountain Park also offers hiking trails, horseshoe pits and a group area. Managed by the town of Rifle since 1921, the park charges $5 for a day pass.
Directions: From Rifle, travel north on State Highway (SH) 13 to County County Road (CR) 325. Turn right and continue to Rifle Gap Reservoir on CR 325. Pass over the damn and continue past Rifle Fish Hatchery.
