Fowler - Eastern ColoradoRocky Ford
Located in southeastern Colorado along the south side of the Arkansas River, the land was once home to hunters and gatherers; tribes such as the Arapahoe, Comanche, Kiowa and Ute all made their homes here. When O.S. Fowler first came to southeastern Colorado in the late 1880s, he envisioned a thriving colony of fruit growers living in this area; though Fowler died a few years later, his vision -- and name -- remained. Today, the Fowler and Rocky Ford communities produce some of the best fruit in the nation -- and they're nice enough to share it with the area's countless visitors. In the summer, farmers' markets and produce stands draw vacationers from near and far to sample fresh vegetables, fruits and -- most importantly -- the famous Rocky Ford melons and cantaloupes. The juicy treats have earned Rocky Ford the nickname "The Sweet Melon Capital of the World." Smart visitors will plan their trip in August, when the Arkansas Valley Fair -- Colorado's longest continuing fair -- takes place. Lucky guests take home free melons on "Watermelon Day" and enjoy carnival rides, games and a rodeo to boot. More fun and excitement can be found at nearby Lake Pueblo State Park, one of the state's most popular destinations. The lake features more than 60 miles of shoreline rimmed with limestone cliffs and buttes, and swimming, boating, fishing and camping are all available. In February, Lake Pueblo Eagle Day allows wildlife lovers to catch a glimpse of one of Colorado's most spectacular birds -- the bald eagle. When visitors are done eating and playing, they can soak in the area's rich history. Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site, the Bogsville Historic District and the Rocky Ford and Fowler history museums are all excellent -- and that's just a start!
